The Courage (To Right a Woman’s Wrongs), a Spanish Golden Age comedy by Ana Caro de Mallén y Soto and directed by Peter Romano, a Syrian-American musician and teaching artist with an MFA from Columbia University and BFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.

Six professional actors will be bringing to our century The Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs, a witty critique of society through the story of Leonor, a woman who sets out to find her one-time lover (Don Juan, naturally) and bring him to justice. The play is a comedy of wild intrigue and lively ingenuity in which Leonor crosses geographical boundaries and defies social expectations of gender in order to bring her fickle lover to justice and restore her lost honor.

The author, Ana Caro de Mallén y Soto (ca.1601–ca.1645), was a Spanish poet and playwright. Born an enslaved person in Granada, Spain, she came to be one of the most celebrated playwrights of Spain’s Golden Age. This adaption, translated by UCLA’s academics, was created by Miami-based playwright, actress, director Maria Corina Ramirez, is available to tour Miami-Dade County public schools.

All performances will be followed by a talkback where topics such as the following can be addressed: Comedia of the Hispanic golden age, overcoming the Don Juan myth, female solidarity, courtship practices, cross-dressing, and theater within the theater.
